Trying to open an iPhone with a regular screwdriver? It won't work — Apple uses proprietary screws specifically to keep people out. Here's exactly what you need.
The essential tools
- Pentalobe screwdriver (P2) — for the two screws beside the charging port. This five-pointed screw is Apple-specific; a Phillips won't fit.
- Tri-point (Y000) screwdriver — for internal brackets on many models.
- Phillips #000 — for other internal screws.
- Suction cup — to lift the screen safely.
- Plastic spudgers and pry tools — ESD-safe, to disconnect cables without shorting anything. Never use metal inside a phone.
- ESD-safe tweezers — for tiny screws and connectors.
- Opening picks — thin plastic to slide around the adhesive.
Don't forget heat and adhesive
A hair dryer or heat pad softens the screen adhesive on the way in, and you'll need fresh adhesive strips to re-seal on the way out.
