USB-C vs Lightning vs Micro-USB: Cable Guide

USB-C vs Lightning vs Micro-USB: Cable Guide | SelfRepairKit

USB-C, Lightning, Micro-USB — if you're confused about which cable your phone needs, here's a plain-English guide.

USB-C — the modern standard

The oval, reversible connector now used by almost every new phone: all Android flagships, and iPhone 15 onward. It's fast, handles high-power charging and data, and plugs in either way up. If you're buying cables today, USB-C is the safe bet.

Lightning — Apple's older connector

The slim, reversible connector on iPhones from the iPhone 5 up to the iPhone 14. Apple switched to USB-C with the iPhone 15, so Lightning is being phased out — but millions of phones still use it.

Micro-USB — the legacy one

The small trapezoid connector (only fits one way up) found on older and budget Android phones. Slower and being retired, but still around.

Why your charging might be slow

Using the wrong cable — or a cheap, damaged one — is a top cause of slow charging. A frayed cable or a worn port can't carry full power. If a new quality cable doesn't fix it, the problem is usually a worn charging port.

A clogged or damaged port is a common, cheap DIY fix. Browse charging-port repair kits for your model.
